Located on the main thoroughfare of Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, this renovations project is a prime example of multi-unit housing expertise. The Emerson first welcomed residents in 1915. While partial updates were made in the 1980’s, Kripper Studio’s scope of work entails the complete restoration, renovation, and enhancement of this unique property.
The interior renovations project reconfigures the internal layout of 31 units, a combination of one-bedroom and two-bedroom spaces. The building is also improved by the addition of a resident elevator that requires the coordination of structural considerations. Brand new mechanical system layouts were also designed and implemented.
The elevator also extends to a brand new roof deck, an amenity which includes sustainable green roof plantings. In addition to the feature on the roof, residents are also provided with a new community gym on the lowest level.
The project also employs ADA accessibility standards, encouraging equity in design. Modern design interventions breath new life into this historic gem of architecture in the heart of Cambridge.
